So tonight the Idol finalists took on songs of the 1950s with... Barry Manilow? Yeah, whatever. He was kind of cute being all excited for the kids, but I'm kind of eh on him.

Mandisa - "I Don't Hurt Anymore" - she's working a Béyóncé eye makeup thing, but she looks fantastic. Holy crap, that was fantastic. I love her SO MUCH. "A great stripper's song," Simon? Oh lord. She's laughing a lot, but I can't tell how much of it is her thinking everything around her is ridiculous.

I just saw a commercial for Chicken Little on DVD. Is Kevin's presence in the competition just an advertisement?

Bucky Covington - "Oh Boy" - it's... really showing his limited range. The low stuff in the verse is scraping the bottom and the high stuff is just flat and bland. Can he leave now? Please? Ugh. Simon's right -- it was "so what". And Paula highlights what's wrong with the show: "people love ya, Bucky".

Paris Bennett - "Fever" - like Bucky, she scrapes what sounds like the bottom of her range during the verses, but unlike Bucky she manages to stay in tune and occasionally show me that she's *not* at the bottom with some vibrato. Then she jumps an octave and... there's nothing more to say. She's great.

Chris Daughtry - "I Walk The Line" - of course when you sing Johnny Cash you have to wear all black. Missi said it was like the Amy Lee version, and I have to agree -- he's unwilling to break his little box. He's good at what he does, but it was... well, it was kind of boring. I think he, like Taylor, relies a lot on the energy of the live performance that we just don't get. ...and Simon thinks he's special because he "refused to compromise"? What. The. Fuck. AHAHAHA ConstantCrap got mentioned!

Katharine McPhee - "Come Rain Or Come Shine" - god, she's a drama geek and I love her to death. Love love love. That was a particularly awesome performance from her, though maybe not quite as all-star as last week's. Wow, that was unprofessional of Paula, saying that Kat is one of her favorites. A big WORD on Simon's analysis.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA RYAN/SIMON. Also, Ryan, what would *you* know about double-stick tape? Oh, and look, there's Taylor being a spazzy asshole.

Unanimous? Looks like a great concept and horrrible execution.

Taylor Hicks - "Not Fade Away" - god, I hate him. He's spazzy and even Barry's orgasm over his voice isn't enough to make me care. This is entertainment, not music. And it's not entertainment I have any interest in watching. NEXT. Paula: "they broke the mold after you". Drew: "THANK FUCKING GOD". Simon: (as if to a five-year-old) "Paula, you're talking rubbish!" Drew: [laughing so, so hard]. Then more Simon/Paula bullshit. Ugh.

There's another whole hour of this. Kill me now.

Lisa Tucker - "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?" - the background is way weak on her and I can't hear the backup at ALL. I suspect that was an amazing performance live, but it was crappily mixed. More fodder for TWoP's Grassy Knoll. If I cared, I would vote for her because I think she got a bum edit.

Kevin Covais - "When I Fall In Love" - bland, bland, bland. I really have nothing more to say other than that Randy and Paula should spare the kid whatever hell he's going through on this show.

Elliot Yamin - "Teach Me Tonight" - awww, I heart Elliot. His vibrato is EVERYWHERE tonight, which could be nerves. He's got all kinds of range, too, and he shows it off, unlike Taylor. (Eeee! It's Lindsey Cardinale!)

Kellie Pickler - "Walkin' After Midnight" - Barry didn't know this? Huh. And I am really unhappy that Kellie picked this, because I tend to like this and I don't want to hear her butcher it. She has nothing at the bottom of her range. And she's doing that so she can shout the rest of the song -- which bothers me much more when she does it than when "divas" do it. She just grates so, SO much. OH SHUT UP. God, go away.

Ace Young - "In The Still Of The Night" - oh boy, he's ending with falsetto. Sorry, friendslist. Ace, you're about ten years too late -- you'd have fit perfectly into one of the cookie-cutter boybands of the late '90s (not the super-talented ones, natch). I don't like this version, but it highlights exactly what Jacob over at TWoP has been saying -- with Ace it's not about the vocals, it's about the... Ace. And he's all "..." to Simon, but his grin comes back and I love him again. SO CONFUSING.
