So early this week FRE called this Chinese restaurant near here to get a reservation for tonight for dinner so the boys (my Friday night group, which occasionally contains a girl or two) and I could all go out to dinner and I wouldn't be cooking this week. Because while I love the boys, and I love cooking for them, I didn't want to do it for my birthday dinner.
She called back this morning to confirm, and they'd written down the wrong day -- tomorrow instead of today. So we rolled our eyes, I threw up my hands and said I'd make dinner. And I did -- chicken and broccoli -- and it was good and FRE made a fabulous non-cake (I don't like cake) that everyone enjoyed. We decided that tonight was my birthday dinner even if we're going out tomorrow (which we are), so we did presents tonight.
FRE gave me [this], and if she spent the list price on it, I will kill her. It's a 5.5 qt stainless steel Cuisinart sauté pan with a lid. I don't have such a pan that can go in the oven -- all mine are nonstick. This is exactly what I've been thinking about getting for the past couple months, and I love her to pieces and will miss her terribly when she's at school. S, who stayed with me recently, redeemed herself by getting me a copy of [The Bread Bible], which I will explore hopefully in detail. N got me the utterly hilarious [Gospel of the Flying Spaghetti Monster], which... I don't think I can explain. See the [FSM's Wikipedia entry] for details.
Some of the boys (plus S) had to go, but then N went over his place and brought back Risk and Settlers of Catan, and we played for a while. I don't know who won Settlers, but when we finally abandoned the game of Risk, we were pretty evenly matched. That game drives me crazy sometimes.
Now I just got around to replying to all the comments in my inbox and I'm going to bed. Caleb, I saw your story; I will read it in the morning, but a pre-emptive thank you is in order :D
